台風の危険半円と可航半円とは？

台風の中心部、台風の眼と呼ばれる箇所は、周囲より比較的大雨や暴風の影響が少ないことは、ほとんどの方がご存知でしょう。しかし、台風の右側と左側で風速が異なることは、あまり知られていないかもしれません。

 

台風の右側と左側、どちらが強風？

上空から見た場合、台風は反時計回りに渦を巻いており、その形状は歪みのある円形。そんな台風の進行方向に対して右半分は危険半円、左半分は可航半円と呼ばれています。

危険半円側では、台風に吹き込む風と台風を移動させる風が、ほぼ同一の方向に吹いていることから、風速が強まる傾向にあります。その一方、可航半円側では、台風に吹き込む風と台風を移動させる風が、ほぼ反対の方向に吹いていることから、風速が弱まる傾向にあります。

とはいえ、台風の接近に伴って天気図を確認した際、自宅付近が可航半円側にあったとしても、全く安心はできません。たとえ可航半円側でも、台風の強風域や暴風域から外れるわけではないのです。危険半円側よりも可航半円側の方が、多少は風速が弱まるというだけ。被害を最小限に抑えるためには、どちら側にいようが警戒し続けなければいけません。
